The Chatterbox

Nine of The Chatterbox’s staff members won write-off awards at the 2018 National High School Journalism Convention in Chicago. The students were tasked with writing articles on the spot, or submitting photography or design portfolios for review.

WHHS participated in the Journalism Education Association / National  Scholastic Press Association (JEA/NSPA) National High School Journalism Convention this past weekend and took home awards in nine different write-off contests as well as finishing first place in the National Journalism Quiz Bowl that featured schools from all across the country.

“I am really happy with how things turned out [in the quiz bowl]–I was surprised by the result but nevertheless very proud of the effort everyone put forth”  SENIOR Nick Robertson said following the Quiz Bowl.

The write off competitions allowed students to produce different works of journalism in a competitive environment. Over 100 students were put in a room and given a topic to produce a piece on. Some students had to make infographics, while others had to create designs or write articles on demand. The best entries in each category were awarded Superior, Excellent, or Honorable Mention awards.  Each school was only able to enter on student category of competition, and WHHS entered students in 16 categories, and won nine awards.

There were over 6000 students participating in the conference and approximately 150 schools; 16 schools qualified for the quiz bowl. Both teams WHHS entered in the Quiz Bowl qualified to be in the buzzer rounds for the top 16 teams. The National Quiz Bowl win was the first in WHHS History, after participating for the first time last year in Dallas. Next year WHHS will attend the convention again in Washington D.C. and try and defend their national title.
