Hajra Munir, ’23 is the editor in chief of The Chatterbox for the 2022-2023 school year.

Hello fellow students, staff and everyone who opened up this newspaper,

In 1922, history was made. Students at WHHS released their very first print news forum, known as the Chatterbox. This was the beginning of consistently published coverage of events and ideas at this prestigious school.

Since those 100 years have passed, amendments have been made, man has made it to the moon and a global pandemic was announced. The Chatterbox has been able to cover these historic events and practice its right to freedom of speech and press.

Before I joined Chatterbox four years ago, I was unsure of the true implications that one’s writing could have on an entire community. After jumping into consistently writing articles and meeting new people around the school, I grew to fall in love with journalism and realized the impact it has.

This issue is a celebration of 100 years of WHHS students who have been covering triumphs and tragedies inside and outside of the school. We are celebrating 100 years of students who have worked to tell the story of those in need of a voice.

Commemorating a century old newspaper is an achievement I wanted to share with the student body and staff. I am beyond thrilled to be a part of a staff that is dedicated to this publication.

The Chatterbox is a community for those with a longing to cover matters that are of importance. The Chatterbox is a representation of our school and how we advocate for our unique student body.

We are not only celebrating what the Chatterbox represents but what it has brought to the staff for the last 100 years. When I think of our paper, I not only think of the narrative it displays, but I think of it as a home.

I have created lifelong friendships in room 2306 that I will hold onto forever. I am forever indebted to this staff and our advisor, GP, for teaching me so much about the relevance of journalism in today’s society.

Let this issue be a reminder of the need for student journalists and how we have affected our public for the last 100 years. I only hope to hear about all the memorable accomplishments that future Chatterboxes are bound to have in the next 100 years.

As you peruse through these black and white pages, take time to enjoy a throwback to our previous issues with a blend of current perspectives from our staff.

Sincerely,

Hajra
