This year’s (2022) World Cup will most likely be these greats last, so let’s check out some stats.

The World Cup is one of the most popular sporting events in the world, so it’s expected that everybody is raving about it. Only one thing is different this year; It’s in the winter instead of the summer, and WHHS students have a lot to say, not only about that, but about everything and anything regarding the World Cup. Yonatan Demtow, ‘28, and Aiden Meyer, ‘27, are no exceptions.

Demtow’s favorite sport is soccer but likes to watch boxing because “it gets you hyped and want[ing] to fight,” Demtow said.

Demtow is interested in soccer and has watched the World Cup in previous years.

“I play soccer and love watching it,” Demtow said.

Demtow plans on watching the World Cup this year and thinks his favorite group will be “Group G: Brazil, Switzerland, Cameroon, Serbia.”

Demtow wants and thinks Brazil will win the World Cup.

“[I think] Brazil [will win] because they have a lot of flair and young talents [also] Neymar deserves it,” Demtow said.

Demtow thinks Brazil and Germany will make it to the finals of the World Cup. “I have high expectations for those teams,” Demtow said.

Demtow does not feel great about the world cup being in November-December instead of June-July.

“[I feel] worse because I won’t be able to watch it because of school,” Demtow said.

Demtow prefers to watch the men’s world cup over the women’s.

“[I prefer] men’s because there are more skills, and blood-boiling moments,” Demtow said.

Lastly, Demtow thinks the purpose the World Cup serves is “love for the sport and people’s countries.”

But Demtow is not the only soccer fan at WHHS. Meyer’s favorite sport is also soccer and he enjoys watching the Champions League final “because the best teams play.”

Meyer is interested in soccer and has watched the World Cup in previous years.

“Last world cup France won and my mom’s from France so that was cool,” Meyer said.

Meyer plans on watching the World Cup this year and thinks his favorite team will be “Group E: Spain, Costa Rica, Germany, Japan.”

Meyer wants Spain to win the World Cup “because my favorite player plays for Spain,” but thinks Brazil is realistically going to win.

Meyer thinks Argentina and Brazil will make it to the finals of the World Cup.

“Maybe Argentina and Brazil [will make it] because they are both well-rounded teams,’” Meyer said.

Meyer’s fine with the World Cup being played in November-December instead of June-July.

“I think it’s cool,” Meyer said.

Meyer prefers to watch the men’s World Cup instead of the women’s.

“[I like to watch the] men’s, but I really enjoyed watching USA Women’s games too,” Meyer said.

Meyer thinks some people got unfairly left out of the World cup.

“Some Spanish players got left out like David De Gea and some others,” Meyer said.

Finally, Meyer thinks that the purpose the World Cup serves is “worldwide enjoyment.”
