The wonderful world of stagecraft

SENIOR Naomi Bronze, Stagecraft student, is working on blink props. The fine arts department has worked for months preparing for Blink and their part in it.

Stagecraft is a first-hand experience in the world of carpentry, electrical, engineering and creative design that is offered at WHHS. WHHS also offers stagecraft for the construction of sets for performances in the theatre department.

The theatre crew in stagecraft is a group of people who work backstage to ensure that the set is ready for each performance. They are responsible for moving scenery pieces, props and furniture on and off the stage, setting up and striking the set. Stagecraft crew members are also responsible for painting and maintaining the set.

The class and crew work hard to maintain and make the main factors of the play.

“The stage sets add so much.SENIOR Lillian Klinedinst, a stagecraft student, said. “If we didn’t have both times and places to make the sets then the play wouldn’t be as interesting.”

Described as “difficult while also so much fun,” according to Klinedinst, the stagecraft class revolves around teaching students to have electrical and building skills.

Many side projects happen while also focusing on sets for plays.

“Right now we are working on projects for Blink while also spending some time on scenery for Macbeth,” Klinedinst said.

In theatre, stagecraft is an optional crew. Crew members are designated to make scenery for the current play they are on a crew for. No previous stagecraft experience is needed to join the crew.

Theatre provides a unique opportunity for the audience to be a part of the story. It is a powerful way to explore human emotions and it helps people learn about themselves.

Sets showplace and landscape. They make the play come alive for the audience by making the background realistic and detailed.

“Making things is my passion, it’s especially fun when you are building things that support one huge, final project that everyone is collaborating on,” Klinedinst said.
