WHHS wins at 2019 NHSJC
WHHS participated in the Journalism Education Association/National Scholastic Press Association (JEA/NSPA) conference in November and took home awards in ten different write-off contests, as well as finishing first and second place in the National Journalism Quiz Bowl that featured schools from all across the country.
“Even when we were down in the second round, we worked really well as a team and lifted each other up,” Delaney Owens, ‘21, said following the Quiz Bowl win.
The write off competitions allowed students to produce different works of journalism in a competitive environment. Over 100 students were put in a room and given a topic to produce a piece on. Some people had to make infographics, others had to create designs and some wrote articles. The best pieces in each section was awarded. Each school was only able to enter one student per competition, and WHHS won ten different awards.
There were over 6,000 students participating in the conference and approximately 150 schools; 44 schools participated in the Quiz Bowl. WHHS had two Quiz Bowl teams in the 16 qualifying teams. Those two teams would both fight to qualify for the final round where a suspenseful and historic final was WHHS vs WHHS.
The Quiz Bowl win was the second in WHHS History, after winning for the first time last year in Chicago. Next year WHHS will attend the convention again in Orlando FL and participate in the quiz bowl for the fourth time. The team will be going for National Journalism Quiz Bowl history with their third straight win.
