After 50 years of being incarcerated, Native American activist, Leonard Peltier, has been released. Peltier’s two life sentences were commuted to home confinement as one of former President Joe Biden’s last official actions in office.
Peltier was convicted of killing two FBI agents in 1975, though Peltier maintained his innocence for the past 50 years. Calls for Peltier’s release had grown due to his declining health and advanced age.
Peltier was greeted with a welcoming party at the Pine Ridge reservation in North Dakota and was given an eagle staff from his supporters.
