Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy on Monday, Nov. 18, after the airline incurred significant debt over the past four years and grappled with an incomplete merger plan.
The airline issued a statement relaying that the decision will not affect customers and promised that “guests can continue to book and fly without interruption and can use all tickets, credits and loyalty points as normal.”
Spirit Airlines is not the first airline to do this. Major airlines—the largest being American Airlines, United and Delta—have all filed for bankruptcy within the past 30 years.
This is not unsurprising for the airline, with the New York Times reporting the company has not made an annual profit since 2019 and lost a reported amount of $5.5 billion over the past five years.
