The men’s lacrosse team had an underwhelming season last year, finishing with a record of 1-14. However, this year, they have turned the team around. With a record of 6-1 in the team’s first seven games, they have amounted more wins this year than the past four years combined. This early success has the team determined to put last season’s woes behind them. Russell Corby, ‘24, has started for four years on varsity and credits experience and chemistry to the team’s turnaround.
“Last year we only had three seniors that contributed,” Corby said. “This year we have a strong group of core guys that all know how to play with each other.”
The team has 10 seniors this year, all of which have been on varsity for multiple years. With this experience comes big responsibilities. Joshua Cholak, ‘24, has grown into a bigger role this year. As a starter on defense, Cholak is second in interceptions in the ECC, with three in the first seven games.
“Our expectations are way higher. We trust our teammates a lot more and expect everyone to perform,” Cholak said.
This newfound trust, along with two new coaches, has the team playing with more confidence than ever. The team added two assistant coaches this season to allow the players access to more individual as well as position based instruction.
“I feel like I have helpful eyes on me at all times during practice,” Cholak said. “I’m getting better each day.”
This improvement has shown in production on the field. Sitting at third in the ECC, the Eagles are on track for their highest finish in the conference since 2019. This great start to the season has the team playing with a newfound energy and confidence.
“We believe every game that we are going to go out there and win,” Corby said.
