Haiti is on the brink of civil war with gangs in control of most of the country while its prime minister, Ariel Henry, is left stranded in Puerto Rico because Haiti’s airports are being surrounded by the gangs.
Henry originally had left the country on a trip to Kenya to acquire aid against the gangs led by Jimmy Chérizier, who threatened more violence unless Henry resigned.
The gangs have increased their control in Haiti ever since the assassination of Haiti’s president in 2021, with Chérizier planning to establish a new government to replace the current democracy.
As the country remains in a state of emergency, Haiti continues to try to rally support from neighboring countries with the US providing funding to aid citizens and the fight against the gangs.
While the US does not support the violence going on throughout Haiti, they are encouraging Henry to expedite the transition process.
