On Feb. 29, the largest wildfire in state history ignited across many counties in Texas and Oklahoma.
The Smokehouse Creek Fire in Hutchinson County burned over 1 million acres of land, and the flames covered an area larger than the size of Rhode Island.
There were also at least 12 fires in Oklahoma that covered more than 115,000 additional acres.
The fire has burned through livestock, crops and infrastructure and has created power outages because approximately 115 miles of power lines were damaged and need to be rebuilt according to North Plains Electric Cooperative.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a disaster declaration for 60 Texan counties because of the massive wildfire.
Shortly after, President Biden stated that 500 federal personnel were aiding the fight against the fire and urged people to listen to local officials’ warnings.
