One common hobby among many students is watching movies; however, many students don’t know about film club, which gives students a space to watch and discuss films.
“I really wanted a place at school where I could talk about [films] with people who also really appreciated it,” Nia Person, ‘24, founder and president of film club, said. “I knew that there were people at Walnut who really liked film and were really into it, but there wasn’t a club for people who are interested in [film].”
The club allows students who enjoy watching and analyzing films to connect and bond over their interest in films.
“[Film club] focuses on the analysis of movies,” Faith Wallace, ‘24, a member of film club said.
The club analyzes a wide variety of movies across many genres. Some examples include “Fight Club,” “Moonrise Kingdom” and “May December.”
“‘Get Out’ [has been my favorite movie we watched] because we had a whole discussion and analysis about the racial aspects, [which] I hadn’t really thought about,” Wallace said.
By diving deeper into films, members are able to share their thoughts with each other and see new perspectives.
“My favorite part is how deep the conversations can go,” Person said. “We always start off with a really general topic, and then it ends up venturing out to so many different places, and it’s really interesting.”
The club not only watches movies but also learns more about other parts of the film industry.
“We go over different directors; we went over David Lynch, Spike Lee and Ari Aster,” Parson said. “We also do different activities, like [learning about] a movie through the story circle [and other activities].”
No matter their interest, film club can be appealing to a large range of students for different reasons.
“We’re always welcoming new people to come and talk, and even if they don’t want to talk, people sometimes come in to just sit and listen,” Person said. “We have snacks [and] we watch movies. It’s really chill. It’s not super stressful, and you don’t have to come to every single meeting, so I’d really recommend it.”
