The freshman choir is overflowing with new singers, with over 100 students in the class. The class is bursting with new energy, enthusiasm and harmonies that fill the choir room.
“Sometimes it feels like we’re trying to steer a cruise ship rather than a speed boat,” Anthony Nims, a choir director at WHHS, said.
With a surge in the number of freshman choir students, not only will there be more challenges with getting every student on the same page, but more opportunities to experiment with new formations.
“We found that it helps to split the class up and take the sopranos and the altos into the recital hall, while the basses and tenors stay in the choir room,” Nims said.
At the same time, student leaders are also stepping up to help manage the classroom. Co-presidents Katherine Hoffman, ‘29, and Charlie Hans, ‘29, are both excited to overcome hurdles as they work together with their classmates.
“It’s such a fun experience being able to be a part of the largest freshman choir, and being able to help out [other students] and just really try to achieve the best,” Hoffman said. “With such a large group, you obviously want to make sure everybody’s the strongest singer they can be. So, you have challenges making sure everyone is on the same page and with such a large group and with people at different [levels] in their singing career, that’s really hard.”
Sharing that same sentiment, Hans expressed her excitement about taking on the leadership role of co-president.
“I think it’s going to be really fun because we get to be in charge of 107 people and have them all listen to us,” Hans said.
With so many new voices, the freshman choir is setting the stage for a strong year. While the size of the class presents its obstacles, Nims sees it as a positive sign for the program’s future.
“Having a big choir is really exciting, both for what the choir can achieve in this year but also for us moving forward,” Nims said. “Our choirs next year, the men’s ensemble and the women’s ensemble choirs, are going to be massive and extremely talented.”
