Colossal Biosciences was able to create multiple genetically exact specimens of the formerly extinct species, known as the dire wolf, thanks to the use of genetic engineering. The first two specimens, Romulus and Remus, were born to two surrogate mothers that were both modern domesticated dogs and given genetically altered gray wolf blood.

The pups were born in October 2024 with a third one, Khaleesi, being born in Jan 2025. Colossal plans to not only rebirth the dire wolf species, but the dodo bird and their major goal of the wooly mammoth as well.

However, some biologists are skeptical to classify the three pups as actual dire wolves due to the nature of their creation.
