American-based restaurant chain, Waffle House, recently announced that they will add a 50-cent upcharge per egg due to a sudden influx in egg prices across the country.
According to CNN, the rise in egg prices is due to the recent spread of avian flu, which is reportedly harming supply. Also known as bird flu, the disease has been raising the prices of eggs since January 2022, but a surge in the number of infected chickens have resulted in another spike in prices, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation.
The disease, which is spread through wild birds, has impacted approximately 8% of nationwide poultry supply. Waffle House serves around 272 million eggs per year across its 2,100 locations, making it the most ordered item on the menu.
The company released a statement about the situation stating that they will be “continuously monitoring egg prices and will adjust or remove the surcharge as market conditions allow.”
