Roughly 12 hours into TikTok’s shutdown in the United States, the company reversed its decision following President Donald Trump’s pledge to preserve the platform.
Trump suggested that he would require the company to give up 50% ownership to avoid another shutdown in the U.S. In addition, he signed an executive order following his inauguration yesterday, instructing the Justice Department to not enforce the ban for 75 days. This gives the parent company, ByteDance, the chance to sell to an American buyer or another buyer based in a country that is allied with the US.
Lemon8 and CapCut are also both companies owned by TikTok and therefore are reliant on the deal to stay available to American users.
