Luigi Mangione was charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione was found at a McDonalds in Pennsylvania four days after the crime was committed after police found him in possession of a 3D-printed ghost gun and manifesto with a rationale for the shooting.
While investigations are still ongoing, initial reports indicate the shooting was motivated by contempt for American insurance companies. Evidence includes bullet casings from the crime scene engraved with the words “Delay,” “deny,” “defend,” the title of a 2010 book critical of insurance practices. In addition, the manifesto found on Mangione detailed a belief that insurance companies prioritize profits above customers. Mangione suffered from chronic back pain, which may have influenced his personal views.
The case quickly gained traction online as users used the chance to vent similar frustrations about a lack of equity and access in the American healthcare system.Mangione’s legal team is currently contesting their client’s potential extradition to New York. Initial hearings in the case have already begun, but a court date has not yet been announced.
