The Senior and Chamber Orchestras performed a Halloween-themed concert on Oct. 29, making it a highlight of this year’s Halloween season.
This concert is the first time the Senior and Chamber Orchestras have performed together since the program began. The orchestras played Halloween-themed songs such as Ghostbusters and Halloween Theme.
The orchestra department only puts on a Halloween performance every two to three years, making it less likely for the musicians and audience to get tired of the music as often.
“For us to go through new music, or to bring back pieces, or do a concert in a different way, [that] keeps us on our toes, keeps us fresh, which hopefully then comes across to the students as well,” Chris Gibson, the music department chair and orchestra teacher, said.
This year, the orchestra held their performance in the auditorium. To make it more fun for everybody, all the musicians were in costume. In the past, local kids came by while trick-or-treating.
“It’s fun; we see it more as an entertainment concert with the opportunity to play some bigger works and things like that,” Gibson said.
Shreemayi Anandheri Kandadai, ‘28, a student in the Senior Orchestra, commented before the concert that she believed it would be fairly easy despite having less practice time than usual.
“I’d say both of [the songs] are pretty easy compared to our other songs that we’ve done throughout the year; these two [songs] are easier than [previous songs],” Kandadai said.
Aubrey Bens, ‘28, another student in Senior Orchestra, had a slightly different view on the subject.
“I didn’t take senior last year, so it’s [going to] be more difficult, but it’s still fun,” Bens said.
Overall, Gibson believed that the concert would be successful.
“The kids, they want to play well. They want to do well. So I think they’ll pull it off,” Gibson said.
