President-elect Donald Trump appointed Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). 

The panel aims to cut an estimated $500 billion in federal spending and eliminate government jobs the Trump administration deems unnecessary. According to a recent op-ed by Musk and Ramaswamay in the Wall Street Journal, targets for cuts include veteran healthcare programs, childcare programs, public media companies, international outreach programs, Planned Parenthood and NASA.

The name of the panel may conjure imagery of a meme that gained prominence online that shares the title, featuring Shiba Inu. Musk has frequently associated with the term on his social media platform, X and promoted a Dogecoin cryptocurrency.

The scope and legality of the panel’s goals to influence federal spending, which is typically controlled by Congress, remain uncertain. Regardless, these details will become more clear as the Trump administration takes office this January.
