On Feb. 20, President Donald Trump hosted a Black History Month event at the White House, celebrating the contributions of African-Americans to the nation’s history.
Notable guests included golf legend Tiger Woods, and the event also highlighted Trump’s focus on criminal justice reform. During the celebration, he announced the appointment of Alice Johnson, a prominent advocate for prison reform, to a key role on the issues of clemency.
Johnson had previously gained national recognition from Trump during his first presidency after he commuted her life-long sentence in 2018. Since then, she has been focused on reforming the criminal justice system.
However, the celebration was overshadowed by the controversy surrounding Trump’s executive order to end federal diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs.
