Some of Europe’s most esteemed art galleries have been under scrutiny recently due to a series of break-ins and mismanagement scandals.
Most recently, on the night of March 22-23, thieves stole three paintings from the Magnani Rocca Foundation near Parma, Italy.
Police believe the crime was carried out by an organized gang.
The three paintings stolen were, “Fish” by Auguste Renoir, “Still Life with Cherries” by Paul Cezanne and “Odalisque on the Terrace” by Henri Matisse. The three paintings were said to have been worth millions of Euros.
This comes after the Louvre Museum was broken into on Oct. 19, 2025, with thieves making away with eight items, all of which belonged at one point or another to French imperial rulers. Since the heist, only one piece of jewelry taken from the Louvre has been found.
In February 2026, Louvre director Laurence de Cars resigned due to a combination of issues, such as staff strikes, burst water pipes and of course, the infamous October heist from the Apollo Gallery.
French President Emanuel Macron stated that he wishes to give de Cars a position focusing on global cooperation between museums following her tenure at the Louvre.
