On Friday, March 14, a car collided with a tanker truck carrying oil, which caused an explosion on I-471 in Newport, Ken. All lanes, northbound and southbound, were closed for 20 hours following the collision, however there was no major damage to the overpass.
No casualties or major injuries were reported. The three people in the car including two children, ages six and 12, were taken to Cincinnati Children’s hospital with minor injuries. The truck driver sustained minor injuries and was able to leave after being treated on-scene.
“Thankfully there were only minor injuries. Please take this closure into consideration while traveling in the area. Thank you to our KYTC [Kentucky Transportation Cabinet] team members, law enforcement and first responders for their quick response,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a statement Saturday morning.
