On Tuesday, the Rev. Jesse Jackson passed away at age 84, surrounded by his loved ones. For the last couple of months Jackson was under observation at the hospital for progressive supranuclear palsy, or PSP.
“Our father was a servant leader — not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless and the overlooked around the world,” the Jackson family said in a statement.
“We shared him with the world, and in return, the world became part of our extended family,” the family said. “His unwavering belief in justice, equality and love uplifted millions, and we ask you to honor his memory by continuing the fight for the values he lived by.”
Jackson worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at his Southern Christian Leadership Conference and went on to create his own organization, the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, a nonprofit organization that advocates for civil rights and equality.
