The 68th annual Grammy Awards returned to Los Angeles, Calif. on Feb. 1 with comedian Trevor Noah returning as the host for the sixth and final time.
The night belonged to Kendrick Lamar, who took home the most awards of the night, receiving five and surpassing Jay-Z to become the most winning rapper in Grammy history. Lamar’s wins this year included Record of the Year for “luther (feat. SZA),” Best Rap Album for “GNX” and Best Rap Song for “tv off (feat. Lefty Gunplay).”
In another top category, Olivia Dean won the race for Best New Artist following a medley performance alongside her fellow nominees. Billie Eilish and FINNEAS also made history, taking home Song of the Year for “WILDFLOWER,” and becoming the first songwriters to win the award three times.
Meanwhile, just days ahead of his Super Bowl halftime performance, Bad Bunny took home Album of the Year for his album “DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS,” making history as the first fully Spanish language album to win this honor.
The ceremony also served as a platform for many celebrities to protest the recent actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Several attendees chose to silently protest, such as Justin and Hailey Bieber, Kehlani and Joni Mitchell, who wore “ICE out” pins on the red carpet and throughout the telecast.
This message echoed even louder during Bad Bunny’s speech following his historic Album of the Year win. He received a standing ovation from the crowd after delivering a strong message, “We’re not savage. We’re not animals. We’re not aliens. We are humans, and we are Americans.”
