Indiana University defeated The University of Miami 27-21 to clinch their first ever national championship on Monday, Jan. 19. Indiana is the first new team to win the national title since the Florida Gators in 1996.
This marks a historic turnaround for the Hoosiers, who entered the season with the most losses in college football history. In addition, Indiana is the first team to go 16-0 in the modern era.
The moment holds exceptional significance for Heisman-winning Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who played in his hometown of Miami to win the title against a team which did not recruit him out of high school.
