Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro pleaded not guilty to United States charges accusing him of drug trafficking Monday in a New York federal court, after his arrest by U.S. authorities, a case that could affect the U.S. and Venezuela’s relationship.
“I am innocent. I am not guilty,” Maduro said through a translator during his arraignment, rejecting accusations that he conspired with drug cartels.
Maduro has ruled Venezuela for over a decade amid international criticism and many sanctions.
U.S. prosecutors allege Maduro worked with criminal organizations to move large quantities of cocaine into the United States and used his political power to protect traffickers. The charges were first filed years ago, but escalated after his recent arrest.
