Secret menu items. Some think they’re myths, some claim they’re real, most are too scared to test for themselves: until now. Cal Moore, ‘27, and I decided to indulge in these rumored secret menu items, specifically at Arby’s, Shake Shack and Chick-fil-A.
Many know about the rumored “secret” menu item we tried at Arby’s… the Meat Mountain. A few years back, this thing was all over TikTok, and believe it or not, they had an actual item to charge me for.
Costing a total of $13.82, the Meat Mountain is a combination of every piece of meat available at Arby’s (chicken, turkey, ham, corned beef, roast beef and more) along with cheddar and Swiss cheese.
Although it did not look appealing, the meat was pretty good. The only thing that brought it down a few points was the chicken tenders at the bottom; they didn’t really fit the consistency and were out of place in the sandwich.
Despite the fame of the Meat Mountain also definitely raising its rating, it was pretty good. If I were ever hungry enough to eat all of it, I would buy it again. This sandwich was rated an 8/10.
The next stop on our adventure was Shake Shack. Before going there for this article, I had no clue there was even a Shake Shack in Cincinnati, and I sure am glad that I know now.
The two foods we got were the meat cube and the burger fries. While not the most ground-breaking items, both dishes turned out to taste very good.
The meat cube, a regular shack burger with four patties, was one of the best fast food burgers I’ve ever had. With the good flavor yet simplistic “secret” and a hefty price at around $15 for just a burger, we gave it a 5.5/10.
The other secret menu items we tried were the burger fries. To make this, it’s as simple as taking some regular fries and a patty and crumbling it over the fries. It was actually not horrible, mostly because Shake Shack’s fries are quite tasty themselves.
My only real complaint about this meal was that it didn’t seem like much of a secret menu item, but more of a combination you make with extra food. I also didn’t think they really went together; it felt more like I had a fry and a burger in my mouth at the same time, not like they were meant to be combined. Overall, we gave the burger fries a solid 3/10.
Chick-fil-A was the final stop on our trip, and by this point, I was about ready to be done. At Chick-fil-A, the secret menu items we decided to try were the fried chicken club and the nugget mac and cheese.
The fried chicken club was another pretty simple secret menu item. It was a regular chicken club, but the chicken was fried instead of grilled. I eat chicken clubs often, and this fried chicken club wasn’t too bad. The fried chicken was definitely better than regular grilled chicken, but it gave more of a feeling of just a fried chicken sandwich than an altered chicken club.
I also feel that the healthiness of grilled chicken is the whole point of getting a chicken club, so by exchanging it with fried chicken, it defeats the purpose. Since the meal was decent, but kind of just a regular fried chicken sandwich, we gave it a respectable 5/10.
The other item from Chick-fil-A, the nugget mac and cheese, was slightly more inventive. By simply putting some of the nuggets in the mac and cheese, the combo elevated the mac and cheese to more of a hearty and delicious meal that I could definitely go for again.
While also facing the challenge of not being the most creative item, it was actually good and felt like it belonged together, unlike the burger fries. So, for all of that, we gave the nugget mac a 7/10.
Overall, this was pretty fun. It was interesting to see all the weird combos, and it made fast food more interesting if that’s what you’re into.
