On Dec. 29, after spending almost two years in hospice care, former President Jimmy Carter passed away peacefully at 100 years old, becoming the longest-lived president in US history. 

President Joe Biden announced a national day of mourning on Jan. 9. This includes a day off for those who work for the government. 

Biden described Carter as a “man of character, courage and compassion” in his solemn proclamation.
