Facebook under fire

On Jan. 31, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, the parent company of the social media platform Facebook, testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee due to rising concerns about online child safety.

The issues mentioned included sexual exploitation, negative impacts on mental health and suicide.

“You have a product that’s killing people,” Sen. Lindsay Graham said, directed at  Zuckerberg, during the hearing.

Also present were the family members of children victimized through Facebook, to whom Zuckerberg delivered a short, unplanned apology at, on request of Sen. Josh Hawley.

In his apology at the hearing, Zuckerberg insisted that his corporation is “[making] sure nobody has to go through the types of things your families have had to suffer,” according to AP News.
